What is Dandruff ?

Dandruff (also known as seborrheic dermatitis) is an excessive shedding of the skin's top layer on the scalp, eyebrows, or along the sides of the nose. The top skin layer is made up of dead cells which protect the more fragile cells below. It is normal that these should be shed or rubbed off, as the body constantly produces new cells that simply move up to replace older ones. For dandruff however, larger "scales" are shed at a higher rate. Dandruff is simply an aesthetic issue that is unattractive or humiliating to many. There's nothing serious about it, scientifically. It won't lead to baldness and it isn't contagious. Itching may accompany dandruff. Normally Hair follicles (hair shafts roots) don't get infected
Dandruff occurs as often in men as it does in women. This tends to increase in adulthood and adolescence, and then decrease. Those with acne or dry skin appear to have more dandruff problems, too.
Dandruff usually improves during the summer months, except when the weather is particularly hot and humid. It can be managed by exposure to natural sunlight and a reduction in stress.

The cause of dandruff is unclear. It can be linked to hormone production, as it usually starts during adolescence. It may be exacerbated by exposure to a micro-organism normally found on the skin and the scalp.

Shampoo type: The most significant treatment for dandruff is daily washing with a normal shampoo. Use a normal shampoo to take off the scales as quickly as they shape. Additionally, the shampoo detergents can induce shedding of tiny, less visible flakes. Many people mistakenly think that a dry scalp causes dandruff, which improves by seldom shampoing or applying oily substances to the scalp. This will in effect aggravate the disorder by stopping cells from being shedded.

When dandruff is not regulated by frequent washing with a normal shampoo, try the dandruff shampoo. Select goods whose ingredients are successful (check labels):

Very effective: Nizoral 1% (active ingredient: ketoconazole) is an antifungal shampoo which helps to reduce the number of yeast micro-organisms on the scalp.

Moderately effective: salicylic acid and sulfur (selenium sulfide)

When dandruff emerges, dermatologists recommend replacing a normal shampoo with an antifungal shampoo. Dandruff shampoos may need to be regularly used for dandruff protection. As symptoms improve, dandruff shampoos may be used less often.

Method of Hair washing is essential in dandruff care. Lather the Hair twice and leave the shampoo on the hair on the second lather for five minutes (or as indicated on the shampoo label) before rinsing out to allow the medication time to work properly.

The amount of shampoos necessary for controlling dandruff varies from person to individual. Some need to shampoo twice a week, others need shampooing more often, even hourly.

Some people forget that they need to shampoo both the scalp and the Hair. It may be helpful to massage the scalp to facilitate circulation but scrubbing the scalp may be harmful.
